Day 6 at PENSOLE

Thursday, May 5, 2011…..Day 6 at PENSOLE. By Kristina Marrero

Today we came in with a more refined set of ideas revolving specifically around our performance features. Everyone put their eight sketches up and was ready for the next big thing.

I read the quote of the day by the legendary Bruce Lee:

“Daily discovery and understanding is the process of growth and learning. I am happy because I am growing daily and honestly don’t know where my ultimate limit lies. To be certain, every day there can be revelation or a new discovery that I can obtain.”

After taking that in, the group went right back to work, whether it was going to watch a Rugby game or refining their research on Water Polo. Our first guest was Jeff Henderson, Innovation Director of Cole Haan, and he gave us a few good pieces of advice, including, “Always ask ‘why?’” The Cole Haan team met with him to discuss their overall design and branding strategies.

Other guests that stopped by included Cubby Golden(Nike Running), Wilson Smith(Nike Legendary Designer), Edmund Holmes(former PENSOLE students that work for Nike Cleated), Jamal Galloway(former PENSOLE student that works for Nike iD), Jason Petrie(Nike Basketball Designer of LeBron James), Leo Chang(Nike Basketball Design Director) and all of them had a unique perspective on footwear design. Some of them helped me better visualize how to showcase my performance features on the Cricket shoe I’m designing.

The takeaways from today were that everyone has their own design language, and you shouldn’t let anyone take that away from you. Also, something that Cubby noted was that anyone walking up to your board/work should always know your story, because 99% of the time, you won’t be there to explain it.

Around 7 PM, most of us left Uliko Studio and headed back to the hotel for dinner and to start the next phase of design refinement!
